“[Windy City Gay Chorus and Windy City Treble Quire] really is a space that allows you to be yourself. You don’t have to be afraid of who you are there. Because…everyone wants to see who you are!” -Deanalis R., WCTQ Member
We’re thrilled to hear you’re interested in learning more about joining Windy City Gay Chorus (our TTBB chorus) or Windy City Treble Quire (our SSAA chorus). Both choruses are filled with people with a passion for choral music that celebrate diversity, honor creativity, and cultivate pride through musical performance. We welcome anyone who is interested and has a commitment to our mission to audition!
New singer auditions are normally held in August-September, January, and April for Windy City Gay Chorus and Windy City Treble Quire.
Our members come from a wide range of musical backgrounds and skill levels. Auditions are used to place you in the proper vocal section and to assess your skills. For singing members, some basic musical skills are required. Some level of proficiency in reading music is required; music sight-reading is helpful but not required.
Prior to auditioning, candidates may attend an open rehearsal, to experience Windy City Gay Chorus or Windy City Treble Quire in advance. These are actual rehearsals as the Chorus prepares for an upcoming concert. This will give you an idea of what to expect on a weekly basis if you become a member. Sign-ups for auditions are taken, or an actual audition may be held at the conclusion of each open rehearsal.
How do I prepare for the audition?
We know that an audition can be nerve-wracking. Relax! We’ll do our best to make the process as friendly and informal as possible!
• Prepare the audition excerpt provided to you upon confirmation of your audition.
• At your audition, your range and basic sight-reading skills will be assessed with vocal warm-ups and pitch-matching exercises.
How will I know if I’ve been accepted?
You will be contacted within a week of the audition, if not immediately following, depending on the audition schedule and number of auditions. We won’t keep you waiting!
What happens after I’m accepted?
A New Member Orientation and social to introduce you to the organization and current members usually takes place after fall auditions. If you join at other times during the year, we’ll make sure you receive an orientation and receive all needed materials. Whenever you join, Section Cheerleaders in your chorus will help answer questions and help familiarize you with WCPA. You’ll also receive a Member Handbook containing detailed information about Windy City Performing Arts and its policies.
When and where do you rehearse?
For this upcoming 2018 Holiday concert cycle, Windy City Gay Chorus and Windy City Treble Quire will be rehearsing as one combined SATB ensemble on Monday nights from, 7:30p-10:00p at DePaul University (Lincoln Park Campus).
Normally, both choruses rehearse at Ebenezer Lutheran Church (1650 W. Foster Ave, Chicago) in Andersonville, near Foster and Ashland.
Windy City Treble Quire: Mondays, 7:30 pm – 10 pm
Windy City Gay Chorus: Wednesdays, 7:30 pm – 10 pm
How often do you perform?
We perform three regular concerts per year: Holiday, Spring and Pride. Each concert is performed two or three times over a weekend. The week preceding regular concerts is “Tech Week” when dress rehearsals and run-throughs of the concert program are held. You will be notified of any special rehearsal locations, times, and updates through announcements at rehearsals, chorus newsletters, and our members-only website.
In addition to our regular concert season, each chorus may participate in out-reach performances in the Chicago area and beyond throughout the year.
